Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between DOT-406 and MC-306 tank trailers?
Both are specifications for low-pressure cargo tanks that carry flammable liquids. MC-306 was the standard until August 31, 1995; DOT 406 replaced it for tanks built after that date, with tighter requirements for structural integrity and rollover protection. An MC-306 trailer can still be used commercially if it passes its scheduled inspections and pressure tests.
How often does a fuel tank trailer need inspection?
Federal rules under 49 CFR 180.407 set the schedule for specification cargo tanks: an external visual inspection every year, an internal visual inspection and a leakage test on set intervals depending on the tank, and a pressure test every five years. Listings on this site show the DOT status the seller reports; confirm the inspection dates on the tank plate and the test reports before you buy.
